Within each unit will be a mix of required readings and self selected readings related to the themes. These readings include novels, short stories, poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Integrated into each unit will be the understanding of literary terms and vocabulary.
II. WRITING -
Writing assignments will primarily be related to literature themes and activities. Each student will be responsible for turning in a journal entry each week.
III. GRAMMAR -
Grammar will be taught in conjunction with the writing and the students will be expected to incorporate the grammar into their writing. Major grammar topics to be covered include:
A. Sentence structure and kinds of sentences
B. Clauses, dependent and independent
C. Parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections
D. Sentence diagramming
E. Punctuation, both internal and external
Vocabulary will be based both on readings and words with Greek and Latin roots.
